Issue #01: Allow me to introduce myself
January 7, 2024
by Evey Kwong
Random Order is a newsletter with the intention i commit myself into providing readers insights, case studies and observations. Random order is an oxymoron in that the two words are an apparent contradiction in terms: order suggests organization while random suggests a lack thereof. However, like many oxymora, the contradiction is incidental and resolvable by careful consideration.
In the world of polarized opinions and chaos of natural order, the socio-cultural-political incidents have become random; unpredictable. Experts and policy makers have been trying to introduce deliberate order. My intention here is to bring a line of thoughts on design, and how design can shape policies, tackle complex human and more-than-human issues; to bring order.
2023 marked a year of change for many individuals and organizations, as well as for myself. I quit my job at a design agency, and start working with my own clients, primarily with the intent of choosing my collaborators—mindfully. With this mindset, it initiated collaborations with among others, meaningful cooperative studio such as Village One. Village One’s founding ethos pulls in like-minded entities with the idea of decentralizing workplace and expertise to build purposeful digital products and infrastructures. Our first project together was Sovereign Tech Fund, an initiatve from the German government to strengthen the open-source ecosystem. We teamed up to refresh and design their brand. I will write more on this on a later issue. For the meantime, you can read about the project here.
Reeperbahn Festival Website — a visually experimental UI/UX design exploration with State Productions. View project here.
Sound City — The Festival of Music and Art Schools in Brandenburg for VdMK. A brand design project from conceptual to final production stage. View project here.
The cultural sector has been suffering for years of cancelling due to the pandemic. It is hard to believe that sectors such as the music festivals could see a comeback so soon. I collaborated with State Productions to design for Reeperbahn Festival and Verband der Musik- und Kunstschulen Brandenburg (VdMK). Both projects have rekindled my passion in exploring the world of visual music.
Die Grünen / The Green Party of Germany — Work in progress.
The year end has led me further with a new collaboration with Ponderhaus, a young design studio with a social design approach. Together with the team, we refined the German Green Party’s (die Grünen) digital presence, with the aim of preparing the party for the 2025 federal election. We are excited to reveal the results in the next months to come.
Folks, I hope you’re having a calm start of 2024. Thanks for reading!
Take care,
Evey
